Questions,questions....
Arthur is often asked particular questions, usually about his
career, hobbies or leisure interests. Here are the answers to
some of the questions he gets asked frequently. If there’s something
else you’re burning to know then you can get an e-mail to Arthur
using the address at the bottom of the page. We'll put the best
questions on this page.
What was the role you most enjoyed playing in my career so far?
A tie between Sir Andrew Aguecheek in
Twelfth Night (see Gallery 3) and Aubrey Allington in Tons Of
Money at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Did you always want to be an actor?
No, it was a combination of performing
in School plays and later University productions that gave me
the bug. Prior to that I had wanted to work for the Forestry Commission!
How
do you remember your lines?
Constant repetition in rehearsals mostly,
in the same way you remember the words to a song when you hear
it often on radio or television.
Who is your favourite actor/actress?
A tough one as there are so many fine
actors but I’d have to say Michael Gambon and Eleanor Bron.
What are your remaining ambitions?
Many and various. To work with the above
actors one day, to break into movies, to have a string of novels
published and to play Hamlet.
Was ‘Allo ‘Allo! as much fun to make as to watch?
Mostly yes. Of course getting comedy
right is serious stuff - but I take pleasure in that. As a cast
we had many laughs together and I have made what I hope will be
lifelong friendships with several members of the cast.
How did you manage to scramble those words?
By concentrating on what I would be
saying if I were speaking normally. Keeping the stresses on the
same words etc.
What was your favourite scene to play in ‘Allo ‘Allo!?
Hard to say. Any scene with the late
and great Kenneth Connor, one of the loveliest people I’ve had
the pleasure to work with - and a couple of scenes with Gorden
Kaye and Kirsten Cooke where the timing was just right and you
felt good.
How did you get the part of Crabtree in ‘Allo’Allo!?
I had worked for writer/director/producer
David Croft OBE three years before joining ‘Allo ‘Allo! on an
episode of Hi-De-Hi in which I played Peggy’s (Su Pollard) boyfriend.
It was only four lines but it was a very funny scene and David
remembered it I’m delighted to say.
When is the next series coming out?
There are no plans as far as I know
for any more episodes to be made.
What are your hobbies/interests?
Watching and playing tennis. Reading.
Cooking. Going to the theatre/cinema. Walking. Travel. People-watching.
What music do you listen to?
It’s changed over the years from Motown
when I was in my teens to Carole King, Joni Mitchell and various
singer/songwriters throughout my life. These days Joni Mitchell
is still my number 1, closely followed by Shawn Colvin, Bonnie
Raitt , Mary Chapin Carpenter and Marc Cohn. I’m also getting
into more modern jazz these days.
Who are your favourite writers?
I love reading the Brontes, Jane Austen
and Wordsworth from the Romantic period. My favourite modern authors
are Barbara Pym, Alison Lurie and Carol Shields but if I could
possess only one book it would be something by P.G.Wodehouse.
The master.
